Histologically, verruca vulgaris is characterized by acanthosis, papillomatosis, and hyperkeratosis, with elongation of the rete ridges. The blood vessels in the superficial coriurn and papillae are usually dilated.
There are usually foci of vacuolated cells that contain small, deeply basophilic nuclei located in the upper layer of the stratum malpighii.
The circular virus particles, which measure about 55 microns in diameter, can be seen by electronmicroscopic examination. |
