A pilomatricoma (or calcifying epithelioma of Malherbe) is a benign, usually solitary tumor arising from hairbearing skin, which shows a differentiation toward hair cortex cells.
These tumors arise most commonly on the skin of the face and upper extremities during the first two decades of life. A firm or indurated cystic lesion occurring in a child or young adult suggests the possibility of a pilomatricoma.
This patient presented with a smooth, round tumor involving the epithelium at the posterior entrance to the external auditory canal. The area of the tumor has a red discoloration of the overlying skin. |
