Description : In this radiograph of a patient with acute gout affecting the metatarsophalangeal joint of the left great toe, the soft-tissue swelling around the joint is caused by urate deposits with surrounding inflammation. Both the metatarsophalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joints of the right great toe show the characteristic punched out lesions of gouty tophi.
